DHgate direct or a shopping agent: which route costs less for one item, five items or a full haul

Last updated .

Short answer: Buy on DHgate directly when the order is one or two cheap, unbranded items from a single seller; switch to Taobao or Weidian through an agent once you are combining four or more items, because one consolidated parcel with warehouse photos beats several separate DHgate shipments. For that second route, the spreadsheet here links 10,000+ real-photo finds that open on any working agent.

The short version, in one table

The two routes differ in who handles your parcel between the seller and your door. On DHgate, the seller packs and posts it. With an agent, the seller ships inside China to a warehouse, the agent photographs your item, and only after you approve does it go abroad, combined with anything else you bought. Everything else follows from that.

Single seller and small parcel: DHgate. Several shops or fit-sensitive pieces: agent.

Worked example: one hoodie

Say a hoodie costs $24 on DHgate with "free shipping" to the UK. In practice that shipping is part of the $24, and the UK collects VAT at checkout on consignments up to £135, so you pay roughly the listed price plus VAT and wait two to four weeks on an economy line. The same style on Taobao might cost ¥120, about $17, but an agent will charge Chinese domestic delivery, then international shipping by weight, which for a single hoodie on a cheap line is often $15 to $25. For one item, DHgate wins comfortably.

Worked example: a five-piece haul

Now take shoes, two hoodies, a cap and a belt from four different sellers. On DHgate that is four separate parcels, four tracking numbers, four dispute windows and four customs events in markets that charge per parcel or per category. Through an agent, the five items arrive at one warehouse, you see photos of each, you can remove shoe boxes to save weight, and a single parcel of about 3 kg ships on one line. Even with a service fee, the per-item shipping cost falls sharply, and you avoid the most common DHgate complaint: discovering the wrong size only after it has crossed the border.

The cost calculator runs both routes with your own prices, shipping quotes and tax rate. It never assumes an agent's shipping price, because those change weekly; you type the quote you see.

The break-even is usually around three or four items from different sellers.

Protection works differently on each route

DHgate's protection is after the fact. Your payment is held until you confirm receipt or the window closes, and if the item is missing or not as described you open a dispute, negotiate with the seller, and can escalate to DHgate mediation. Reviews on Trustpilot show this works best for parcels that never arrive and worst for "not as described" cases, where buyers report token partial refunds. Agent protection is before the fact: you see the item in the warehouse and can return it to the seller inside China before you have paid for international shipping. Neither route protects you if customs seizes trademark-infringing goods; no platform refunds a seizure.

Duty and tax: the same for both, but timing differs

Customs does not care which route you used. In the US, every parcel has owed duty since 29 August 2025; the difference is that some DHgate sellers and some agent lines quote duties-paid shipping, while others leave the carrier to collect on delivery. In the Netherlands and the rest of the EU, VAT applies from the first euro and, since 1 July 2026, a €3 duty per item category for parcels under €150, which favours fewer, larger parcels with fewer categories. Our Netherlands page and US page go into the detail.

What if your spreadsheet mixes both?

Most do. Split it first: the link sorter sorts pasted links into DHgate listings and Taobao, Weidian or 1688 items. Order the DHgate rows directly, and put the rest through one agent from the status table. If you would rather not run two accounts, message our WhatsApp service with the Chinese links and we quote a delivered price.

Split the sheet, buy DHgate rows directly, and consolidate everything else in one agent parcel.

A third option: no account at all

Some readers want Taobao or Weidian items but do not want to manage an agent account, a wallet balance and a shipping-line choice. For them we run a WhatsApp buying service: send the link or a screenshot, receive a delivered price for your country, see photos of the item before it leaves China, then get the tracking number. It sits alongside the two routes above rather than replacing them, and it is not connected to DHgate or to any agent listed on this site.

FAQ

Is an agent safer than DHgate?

Safer in one way: you see the actual item before it ships abroad. DHgate's escrow protects payment, but only after delivery. Agents carry their own risk, which is why we track their status.

Can I use DHgate free shipping and still consolidate?

No. Each DHgate seller ships separately. Consolidation only happens in an agent warehouse.

Do agents charge a fee?

Some do, such as Sugargoo at about 5%; many advertise no service fee and earn on shipping and exchange rates. Each agent page lists what it publishes.

Which route is faster?

DHgate can be faster for a single item on an express line. Agents add warehouse time, typically a few days for the item to arrive and be photographed.

Does using an agent avoid customs?

No. Customs applies to the parcel whatever route it took. Agents can offer duties-paid lines in some countries, which changes when you pay, not whether you pay.
